Checkmate Fire’s growing Fire Engineering Consultancy is celebrating a major milestone after achieving BAFE SP205 accreditation three months ahead of schedule.

When Kevin Creaton joined Checkmate as Head of Fire Engineering Consultancy in January 2026, one of his first objectives was to secure BAFE accreditation by December. Official confirmation arrived last Friday, just eight months later, demonstrating an achievement that not only reflects the considerable work undertaken by the entire team but the dedication of the company in continually raising standards.

BAFE SP205 is the recognised Life Safety Fire Risk Assessment scheme, independently demonstrating an organisation’s competence to deliver high-quality fire risk assessments. Achieving accreditation requires evidence of technical expertise alongside robust quality management, assessment, review and validation processes. For Checkmate Fire, this meant scrutiny of the teams complete approach, from the initial client enquiry and on-site assessment through to peer review, QA and the final report.

The assessment included an office audit examining our processes from the initial fire risk assessment enquiry through to issuing the final report. Jonathan Cowling and I were also individually assessed while undertaking work involving high-rise buildings, demonstrating the knowledge and competency required to assess more complex buildings and deliver detailed, evidence-based recommendations for clients. A lot of hard work has gone into getting this. It’s a robust process and it demonstrates our competencies in fire risk assessment.

The accreditation further strengthens Checkmate Fire’s position within the industry, adding to its growing portfolio of recognised accreditations, awards and certifications. For customers, it provides additional assurance that surveys are being undertaken by competent professionals, supported by rigorous processes and resulting in detailed, evidence-based reports.

It also creates opportunities within the Fire Engineering Consultancy team. BAFE SP205 takes a tiered approach to assessor competency, providing a pathway towards increasingly complex work. We support junior fire engineers and risk assessors through training, CPD and professional development, with a clear ambition to help them progress into more advanced roles. The aim is for today’s junior assessors to become the company’s advanced assessors within the next few years.

Securing BAFE SP205 ahead of schedule is an important achievement and another significant step forward for Checkmate Fire’s expanding Fire Engineering Consultancy.
