Training academy

The Checkmate Fire training academy is more than a coaching facility. It reflects our unwavering commitment to building competence and raising standards – without exception. Our centre for technical excellence, professional development, and industry collaboration, the academy enables us to proactively develop our people, strengthen our supply chain, and give our clients the knowledge to make better-informed decisions.

FOR OUR CLIENTS, COLLEAGUES, AND PARTNERS

Through expert-led, hands-on learning, we are building the capability behind better quality, stronger compliance, and safer buildings.

The academy brings Checkmate Fire’s technical expertise and practical experience into one dedicated learning environment, where people can gain insight from those who work at the forefront of fire protection and security every day. Our commitment to developing that expertise has been recognised with two Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) training and development awards, reflecting our ambition and the quality behind our learning provision.

From realistic installation and maintenance scenarios to specialist equipment,  industry-specific materials, technical demonstrations, and hands-on training, attendees can put knowledge into practice in a controlled environment designed to immerse and enhance their learning. We are proud to deliver expertise in a way you can see, test, and apply, giving you the skills and confidence to get it right in the crucial moments that count.

LEARNING BUILT AROUND REAL-LIFE SCENARIOS

Training for every stage of development and purpose

The academy offers structured learning opportunities for every stage of development and every touchpoint of the fire safety landscape, from new starter induction and technical competence through to specialist training, refresher learning, and leadership development.

Whether we are developing our people, strengthening subcontractor competence, or upskilling clients so they can keep their knowledge current, all training is tailored to the role, requirements, and outcomes that count towards meaningful action.

  • For all who join the business, the academy is the backdrop for a practical introduction to Checkmate Fire's approach, standards, and expectations. It is here we ensure new starters understand the technical, safety, and compliance requirements relevant to their roles. For our trainees and apprentices, this structured learning is combined with practical experience to build strong foundations for their career in fire protection and security – from day one. But we go further than this. We support employees’ development at every stage of their career and, where possible, promote from within and invest in our people to build the capability we need for the future.

  • Technical training sessions are designed around the practical requirements of each role, helping people develop the knowledge and skills needed to carry out their work effectively. Learning can cover installation, commissioning, testing, inspection, maintenance, surveying, and compliance across every one of our specialist disciplines, with opportunities to practise techniques and apply knowledge in realistic scenarios.

  • Our subcontractor and supply chain partners play an important role in the quality, safety, and compliance of the work we deliver. We are keen to offer opportunities for external delegates to access relevant technical training, qualifications, continuing professional development (CPD), and practical learning, helping our partners understand the standards expected by Checkmate Fire and maintain competence as requirements evolve.

  • Competence doesn't end when training is complete – the fire safety landscape does not stand still and nor can we. Refresher learning and CPD help our people, supply chain partners, and clients maintain knowledge, respond to changing requirements and legislation, and stay connected to developments across the industry. Sessions can be delivered through scheduled courses, technical workshops, demonstrations, or bespoke learning, depending on the needs of each audience.

  • We want to be ready for the fire safety challenges of tomorrow, but the preparation for this starts now by developing the people who will meet them. The academy supports supervisors, managers, and future leaders as they look to build out their technical, commercial, and leadership skill sets – creating a clear pathway for progression while strengthening the knowledge and skills this evolving landscape needs for its future.

  • Our vision is for the academy to be wholeheartedly connected to the wider industry and continually evolving to meet its needs. We welcome partnerships with manufacturers and suppliers that share our values and are keen to support technical learning, innovation, and the development of industry talent.

Partners can contribute in a number of ways – whether that is sponsoring a training bay and providing equipment and materials or delivering guest workshops, sharing specialist expertise, and showcasing innovative products and technologies. It is thanks to these key partnerships our training remains current and resonates with the evolving needs of the sector.

THE DIFFERENCE COMPETENCE MAKES

Building better outcomes through competence

We never understate the importance of our industry’s work. Fire safety is, ultimately, about protecting people and, in some circumstances, we are quite literally saving lives. This is why we take our contribution so seriously – supporting business owners, fire safety managers, and everyone responsible for the safety of others to have confidence they have done right by their people.

Whether we are developing practical skills, strengthening compliance, or carving out new partnerships through the academy, our goal is to build a future grounded in competence, confidence, and continuous improvement. Here is more on the ‘why’:

Better quality

Hands-on learning at the academy builds stronger technical skills and more consistent delivery, meaning teams can go on to apply the right techniques and standards throughout every stage of their work.

Stronger compliance

A more detailed understanding of specifications, standards, regulations, and technical requirements enables better-informed decisions and an ability to apply compliance principles confidently throughout installation, testing, and maintenance works.

Fewer defects

Developing practical knowledge and understanding of correct installation and maintenance can help identify potential issues earlier, reduce avoidable defects, and improve delivery quality. Checkmate Fire follows a remediation-before-replacement approach, and this is crucial for our customers.

Safer working

Alongside Checkmate Fire’s wider health and safety, environmental, and quality (SHEQ) approach, the hands-on learning offered at the academy raises greater awareness of risk and safe working practices, helping people to work in challenging environments with more confidence.

Greater customer confidence

Developing and embedding competence throughout our people and supply chain gives our clients (and, by extension, their customers, teams, or building users) greater confidence in the skill sets and capabilities supporting the work we deliver for them.

Safer buildings

Whether we are upskilling our already highly competent and informed fire engineers or demonstrating a fire door inspection for a client’s understanding, the overall purpose of our academy is to strengthen the safety and protection of the built environment. We all have the same end goal, so working together is imperative.

In fire safety and security, knowledge is important – but it is only part of the story. Knowledge, experience, solid fire engineering judgment, and practical application all add up to competence.
